Earth Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day has been calculated since 2006 by the Global Footprint Network, an international organization dealing with sustainability. For this, it uses data from individual countries provided by the United Nations and the International Energy Agency.

In 2023, Earth Overshoot Day falls on August 2nd. However, each country has its own calculated date. The Czech Republic ranks 24th in the world with a date of April 12th, meaning that from today onwards, the country is living on ecological debt for the rest of the year. Earth Overshoot Day represents the calendar date when humanity's resource consumption for the year exceeds the Earth's capacity to regenerate those resources. According to the Global Footprint Network, human demand for resources now exceeds the equivalent of more than 17 Earths. This depletion of resources has evident effects, such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity. The uncertainty of resources can lead to economic stress and conflict.
