World Whales Day

World Whales Day

The third Sunday in February is traditionally dedicated to whales. As part of this day, we are reminded of the reasons for their endangerment and why it is necessary to protect these giant marine mammals. World Whale Day was established in 1980 in Maui (Hawaii) on the occasion of the annual migration of humpback whales.

Thousands of whales migrate to the shores of the Hawaiian Islands to give birth during the winter and spring. The International Whaling Commission has banned commercial whaling since 1986, but some countries continue to hunt whales under the pretext of scientific research. Whales are also threatened by pollution, climate change, ship collisions, and bycatch in fishing nets. Noise pollution from ships and sonar also disrupts their communication and hunting abilities. The blue whale is the largest and heaviest animal, while the sperm whale is the largest toothed whale. The humpback whale is known for its long pectoral fins and sensory function of its humps. Whales were previously believed to sleep with one hemisphere of their brain active and one eye open, but recent studies have shown that they enter full sleep for short periods of around 10-15 minutes. They may also sleep with one eye open, but this has not been fully documented. Whales may adopt a vertical sleeping position to maintain their position while sleeping.
